Stress Management from the Spa
How often do you feel generally run down and attribute it to lifestyle constraints, getting older, or common cold-flu bugs?
According to the Mayo Clinic, overall stress levels may result in many symptoms of illness. But what realistic steps can you take to reduce stress?
The first step is to understand the two main types of stress - acute and chronic. Stress that builds up over time causing physical or emotional problems is chronic, and it can lead to anything from aches, to strong negative feelings, to substance abuse.
Identifying exactly what causes you stress (eg. something at work or home, in a relationship or environment) and when is a huge step in getting a handle on it.
In some cases, you can remove or avoid a source of stress. You can change a florescent bulb to simulated natural light or take a different route to work in the morning.
In other cases, you'll still have to deal with a stressor, but aware of why and how it causes you grief, you'll be better equipped to deal with it.
You'll still have to interact with that overbearing neighbour or uncooperative teenager, but you can identify the stress for what it is and do something to counter it.
The Mayo Clinic recommends the following strategies for dealing with stress:
- Exercise
- Relaxation techniques
- Fostering healthy friendships
- Getting plenty of sleep
- Professional counseling or psychotherapy
One of the main reasons spa consumers visit their favourite local sanctuary is for relaxation. Spa can be a well-earned reward for enduring a stressful experience or a preventative measure against an excessive build up of stress.
